Depth Leadership
“What if we talked about it?” by Thierry Baril’s SPARKING PARTNER ongoing thought leadership series.
When leadership rises, everything else follows.
What if the most powerful thing a leader could do today isn't to know more — but to go deeper? ✨
I spent 25 years in the aerospace industry. A world where propulsion is everything. Where the difference between staying on the ground and reaching altitude is not just a question of power — it is a question of precision, preparation, and the right conditions at the right moment.
I didn't choose the motto of Sparking Partner by accident:
Propelling Leaders, Elevating Organizations!
In aerospace, nothing elevates without something propelling it first.
You cannot skip that sequence. The thrust has to come before the altitude. And that thrust doesn't happen without extraordinary engineering — invisible to most, but absolutely decisive.
Leadership works exactly the same way. What aerospace taught me about leadership:
Propulsion isn't force alone.
In aerospace, raw power without direction destroys. In leadership, energy without intentionality exhausts teams and burns trust.Altitude requires the right conditions.
An organization doesn't elevate because its strategy is perfect only. It elevates when its leaders create the conditions for others to rise. The most critical work happens before takeoff.
Preparation, calibration, clarity of purpose. The leaders who elevate organizations are those who do the deep work — on themselves — before asking it of others.
We live in a world of permanent disruption.
Complexity is no longer the exception. It is the baseline. In this context, the organizations that will rise are not those with the best tools or the boldest plans alone — these are necessary, of course, but they are not sufficient.
What ultimately makes the difference is the quality of the leaders who bring those plans to life: their depth, their ability to stay grounded under pressure, and their capacity to propel others forward — even when they themselves feel the turbulence.
Because here is what I've witnessed across decades and continents:
most organizations invest heavily in leadership skills — and far too little in leadership depth.
Skills tell you what to do. Depth determines who you are when things get hard.
This is what SPARKING PARTNER was built for.
Not to deliver another leadership programme. But to create the conditions where leaders can do the hardest, most necessary work: becoming more intentional, more impactful, more human — in a world that keeps demanding more of them.
Because when leadership rises, everything else follows.
This is the first post of a new series: What if we talked about it?
I'll be sharing these conversations regularly. Not always easy answers.
Just the conversations worth having.
